Back Yard WIFFLE® Ball League
Week 1 — Game Recaps
Gm. 1: N. Conte, Misfits mount rally, walk off season opener
NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI (R.I.W.B.L.) — The Misfits rallied from 5 runs down and walked off with a 10-9 victory in the Back Yard WIFFLE® Ball League season opener against Los Mattatangs.
N. Conte capped off his game-high 3 RBIs with the walk that drove in G. Conte to break a 9-9 tie in the bottom of the 7th. The Misfits were led by G. Conte, who contributed 4 hits and 3 RBIs (including the single that started the 7th-inning rally), and G. Papa, who led off the game with a home run and came a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
Papa also threw three solid innings, allowing just one run and striking out six.
Los Mattatangs were led by M. Peña, who drove in three runs and came in to pitch out of a major jam in the 5th inning, which saw The Misfits rally for 6 runs during their comeback.
Los Mattatangs got out to a fast start with a 6-run 2nd inning, with six different players driving in runs. They added two more runs to their early lead, when Peña struck a two-run home run in the 4th inning. Because of the furious rally by The Misfits, Los Mattatangs found themselves needing one run to stay alive in the 7th. A two-out walk by J. Neves tied the game 9-9, before N. Conte walked it off for The Misfits in the bottom of the inning.

Gm. 2: Toxic Lounge blows double-digit lead, holds off OBC in 9
NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI (R.I.W.B.L.) — N. Miranda and E. Robles each belted a solo home run in the top of the 9th inning, leading Toxic Lounge to a thrilling 18-16 victory.
When Toxic Lounge scored the game’s first 11 runs and took a 15-4 lead in the 7th inning, most on hand sensed a mismatch with no possible comeback in sight.
The fight from Oakland Beach City was just beginning.
Ten minutes after a R. Garcia two-run home run extended the Toxic Lounge lead back to 11, OB City took part in a 7th-inning rally that featured 17 hitters and 11 runs. In ten minutes, they managed to turn a one-sided affair into a tie game. With the bases loaded, however, E. Robles induced a ground out to end the inning, keeping the game tied and forcing extra innings.
Both teams scored one run in the 8th inning, before Toxic Lounge belted the two 9th-inning home runs. For Miranda, it was his third of the game. He and R. Garcia each drove in 5 runs. All three were a triple away from hitting for the cycle. For good measure, Miranda and Garcia each pitched 3 innings and struck out six.
J. Shackleford tallied five hits, including two home runs, while driving in a game-high 6 runs. K. Shackleford pitched all three extra innings and gave OB City numerous opportunities to pull the upset during the additional frames. OB City was able to put two runners on base in the 9th before the rally was snuffed out.
